Bulletin March 24 , 2008

Hey folks. I hope your Easter was good. This Saturday we have a busy afternoon - A concert at the Gallo Arts Center with Pablo Ziegler, before which we can dance at an outdoor milonga, and the State Theatre will show live action shorts nominated for Academy Awards, including "Tanghi Argentini". Details on both below.

Saturday, March 29 - At Gallo Center For The Arts - Pablo Ziegler Quintet
Foster Family Theater - 8 p.m.
Before the concert: Tango in the Plaza
The Gallo Arts Center has invited Modesto Tango to hold an open-air milonga on the plaza near the center entrance (I Street between 10th & 11th street from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will be no charge for the milonga; the public is invited to watch, so bring your dancing shoes and let Modesto know we exist.

Pablo Ziegler was Astor Piazzolla's pianist. Some California tango dancers are unaware of tango history, but nearly all have heard how Piazzolla changed traditional Argentine tango. Today's tango is rabidly popular because of Piazzolla, who owed much of his success to musicians like Ziegler and bandoneonist Daniel Binelli (who will perform in San Francisco in April). Ziegler's Quintet for New Tango will perform with special guest Claudia Acuna, Chilean vocalist. The marriage between jazz and tango was virtually unheard of 30 years ago - until Ziegler burst onto the scene, unifying the two genres and cultivating a sound that combines sultry tango rhythms with the energetic spontaneity of jazz.

TANGHI ARGENTINI at the State Theatre
The State will show the 2007 Oscar-nominated SHORTS FILMS, both animation and live action, during that same weekend. Among the live action shorts is TANGHI ARGENTINI from Belgium. The 13- minute comedy, in French with English subtitles, is about "A man who must learn to dance the tango in two weeks ..and asks an office colleague for help." The full schedule of shorts will play Saturday. March 29 at 3:30 p.m. (matinee); AND Monday March 31 at 7 p.m.
