Modesto Tango Bulletin, Jan. 30, 2012

A busy week ahead.  Our regular Monday practice at Jacobs will defer to a milonga lesson by Florentino Guizar; on Friday we will have our first of a series of first weekend milongas at Jacobs.    It may be slow starting, but we hope to see it grow.
On our website:  This Week's Video  is a study on connection by Gustavo Naveira and Giselle Anne as they maintain parallel torsos apart from each other.

CALENDAR FOR THE WEEK

MONDAY -   Tonight, Jan. 30. Jacobs fine dining,  2501 McHenry.  A departure from our normal practica:  Lesson with Florentino Guizar:
7 p.m. free tango class, suitable for tango virgins: Basic connection, embrace, walking and turns. After 7:30 the fee will be $10
7:30-8 p.m. Milonga  class, in pretty straightforward presentation, covering embrace, walking, simple patterns and repetition of individual elements
8-8:30 p.m. Milonga  Traspie for more advanced dancers,  a relatively simple approach to explore,  limited to the basic movement. This half class covers the  concept of traspie, with simple variations and  patterns.
Come early to enjoy a meal or simply order a drink off the menu.

WEDNESDAY - Feb. 1, Beginner level class at the Senior Center on Bodem.   Normally 2:30 p.m., but a movie, "The Help," will run longer than normal, so we may run a bit late.  Come at 12:30 to enjoy the main SAAG award winner.   211 Bodem (at Scenic). Enter through front door and sign in.  No fee.

FRIDAY - Feb. 3. Milonga at Jacobs, 2501 McHenry.  Come dance in a social setting, using traditional Argentine Tango musical play lists and customs.  No lesson or performance, just an opportunity to dance in a milonga setting.

SATURDAY - Feb. 4  - 11 a.m.-noon Sophia's Dance Journey,  711 10th St., basic   class followed by noon practica. $10 drop-in for the class. $5 practica only. (practica free with lesson). Free for men willing to dance with extra followers.

Teaching philosophy -
What makes you a better dancer is not how many steps you know, but how you are able to execute them. Marcelo focuses on technique, connection with the partner, and musicality. Modesto Tango Bulletin, Jan. 2, 2012

Happy New Year.  Tango life returns to normal with a bang! This Saturday will be our milonga and workshops with Marcelo Solis, our first guest instructor 10 years ago. We got a nice spread in the Bee Friday. Solis taught many years in the Bay Area.  A finalist in the 1994 national traditional stage championship and finalist in 2110 Buens Aires salon dance style in Buenos Aires 2010, he offers "Dancing from Buenos Aires". Marcelo's teaching style is based on how people actually dance in Buenos Aires, not watered-down stage performance tango. He will partner Olga Mateeva, with a strong background in classic ballet, modern and ballroom dance.  She travels regularly to Buenos Aires to dance and continue studying, has worked with teachers Alicia Pons, Nestor La Vitola, Monica Paz, Enriqueta Kleinman  and Jorge Kero. She also enjoys  salsa, swing and Argentine folklore
