4.. Workshop Schedule for Gato & Andrea

1. Anibal Troilo, one of the most revered names from the golden age of tango, has a history that spans two periods. The first in 1937, when he put together his first orchestra, until 1954. The second began in 1956, with vocalists Roberto Goyeneche and Angel Cárdenas, and lasted until his death on May 18, 1975. Troilo was a graduate of a musical school led by Julio De Caro.
He added counterpoint to his arrangements, highlighting his own bandoneon solos. The bandoneons took on the rhythm. The egalitarian and interchangeable roles of the Troilo orchestra reflected a cross-section of the public who danced to his music in the social club.

Among the merits attributed to Anibal Troilo were his intuition in selecting his musicians and singers and his ability to adapt them to his ensemble. His favorite composer was himself. Forty-one of his recordings were his.

The life of Anibal Troilo moved around heartaches. A mild stroke had affected him seriously a year before his death. For 20 years he dealt with excruciating pain caused by an arthritic hip. He once went through hundreds of cortisone shots in a sixty-day period.

On the morning of May 18, 1975, Troilo fainted, and spent most of the day in intensive care at the Hospital Italiano. That evening patrons were filing in the doors of the Teatro Odeon for a performance of 'Simplemente... Pichuco'. That evening the show didn't go on. At 11:40 PM the heart of Anibal Troilo played its final note.

2. In anticipation of our next milonga on June 2, our Video of the Week features Gato & Andrea in a performance they did at the last Modesto milonga they were guest artists for. We look forward to seeing them again.

3. No classes makes it a perfect time to go see Forever Tango, the show that triggered many tango obsessions. Bob Hope Theatre, Stockton, May 26. Details: http://bobhopetheatre.com/eventdetails.asp?ID=128. We hope some will take propaganda for our Modesto tango community. There is no Argentine Tango in Stockton. It will also play Fresno on Wednesday, May 30.
