Modesto Tango Bulletin, Feb. 28, 2011

Early registration deadline for the Tango USA festival is today. This offers noted visiting tango masters and workshops plus a chance to watch the  2011 Tango World Cup competition. The official USA branch of the world tango championship in the area is a coup for California. Gato & Andrea have organized this, and Andrea invites us to challenge ourselves while having fun! All can register and compete.  She says encourage yourself to show what you learned since you began  tango.  You can participate in "Salon Tango," stressing social aspects of the dance, or/and in "Stage Tango" category. There are nine competing couple passes to choose from! Check out www.argentinetangousa.com. More info follows

In Modesto, we have been in contact with the owner of Azucar, a restaurant at J & 10th Streets which offers many Latin dance events, including one yesterday celebrating Xavier Gomez's birthday including some tango.  We spoke of a monthly tango event every second Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m., the first March 13.  With a heavy emphasis on tango we think of alternate dance tandas - sort of takes us back to Buenos Aires when dance halls would hire two bands to spell each-other.  One, of course, a tango orchestra, the other, either swing or "tropical" - So not knowing tango should be no excuse to stay away if you do other dances.

CALENDAR FOR THE WEEK

MONDAY - Tonight, Feb. 28 & Mar. 7. Social dancing and practica at Jacobs Fine Dining, 2501 McHenry. No fee, but you can order food/drink off the menu. It is  a fun evening in a good place to practice class material.

WEDNESDAY - Mar. 2 @ 3 p.m. Beginner classes at Modesto Senior Center, 211 Bodem (corner of Scenic).

SATURDAY -March 5 @ 11 a.m. Class at Sophia's Dance Journey, 711 10th St. (between G & H).  Beginners will progress through basic concepts.  If enough others appear at noon we continue with a "practica." Seasoned tangueros encouraged to join at noon.  Price: $10 drop-in. Practica only: $5 (Included with lesson).
This week pay $35 for all 4 weeks of Saturdays.

SUNDAY - March 13,  3:00-6:00  @ AZUCAR  on 10th and J Sts.
<http://azucarmodesto.com/>http://azucarmodesto.com/ With a heavy emphasis on tango, we will dance to alternating tandas of tango, and other dance styles.

2. Intermediate: a reasonable level of technical understanding of tango,  close and open embrace and a good repertoire of steps is needed (molinetes, barridas, voleos, sacadas). At this level, dancers need to have good navigation and connection.
3. Intermediate/Advanced: You should meet all requirements of the intermediate level described above, lead or follow challenging tango figures and navigate on a crowded floor.
4. Advanced: Understanding technical aspects of tango, navigation, improvisation  and connection are major factors. You should be able to execute complex  figures. Register as a couple for maximum benefit. Some advanced classes will be limited to couples to maximize class content.
