The cold snap may be over; February is almost here. Some of us at the Sacramento Parlor Tango milonga encountered a very crowded floor. Many in our group will attend Roman's Tango and Alenxander Technique workshops; he now has a waiting list. Sean and Charity conduct lessons at the Racquet Club. Portland's Valentango festival comes mid-month.

Roberto & Michelle interpret "Como dos Extranos" by Caseres from the album "Tango Negro" at the Jan. 20 Modesto Tango Argentino milonga. Though the room was too dark for the video equipment, the expression and dancing are beautiful.

2. TANGO AND ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE Workshops offered by Roman & Sherry Feb. 3rd and 4th. has a waiting list. Roman extends his appreciation. The level of dancing in our community can be expected to jump up a few notches as a result of the extra work done by so many in our group.

No fee, but you are urged to order off the menu. We start about 8 p.m. An informal meeting; some come early to dine. We may dance to 10 p.m. Monday at Jacobs

SATURDAY, Feb. 3: Classes with Sean & Charity at Modesto Fitness and Racquet Club, 200 Norwegian, off McHenry. 11 a.m. Intermediate, 12:30 beginning level.

Intermediates are encouraged to stay for the beginner class at no additional fee to work on technique and assist beginners. $12 a class per person.

The weekend has come and gone with a wonderful milonga and some heavy duty workshops with Roberto Riobo. Patrick attended the milonga, as did Ed Loomis, our founding teacher. Thanks to all who helped make it a great weekend. Sean and Charity will teach this Saturday. A number of people have expressed an interest in the milonga at Tango by the River in Old Sacramento, with Parlor Tango offering live music

1. The Video of the Week is a brief look at this Saturday's milonga after the performance and after the lights went down. Though we are not to visible, we were all having a good time. See if you can recognize yourself or someone you know in the dim light.

2. TANGO AND ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE Workshops offered by Roman & Sherry February 3rd & 4th.

Roman writes : I wanted to pass this information on, because we have participated in many workshops together over the years. What did we learn? Many patterns and steps. It didn't make me a more poised and elegant dancer. Then I met my partner Sherry Berjeron-Oliver who had only been dancing tango a few months. She said to me, "I can make you a better dancer, Roman!" (Sherry had been an Alexander Technique teacher for 30 years). I have always been open to new possibilities for improving my dancing, so I proceeded to work with her. She guided me with her hands while I was dancing. Her hands aligned my head and neck while I was standing, sitting, walking and dancing, Her hands changed my Tango form.

"My awareness increased and I discovered so many things I had no idea I was doing while dancing. I was pulling my head and neck down, and because of my head position, my body was tense and my legs could not move freely.

Alexander Technique coordinates mind and body in all activities of living. In the process it organizes our sense of movement, our feelings and emotions, and our experiences of the world around us. Since I've been learning Alexander Technique, I have a general sense of lightness in my movement and a high performance balance. The level of tension throughout my body is reduced. It has enabled me to communicate with followers and aids in listening to the follower's voice while moving freely around the dance floor."

I highly recommend this unique and exciting opportunity. There has never been an Alexander Technique/Tango workshop in this part of the country. If you want to change the quality of your tango form and presentation, don't miss February 3-4th.

Sunday 12 to 3 p.m.

The workshop will feature small group size with three experts. Personal attention with skilled hands on guidance to retrain your new poise with basic movement and dancing. The instructional process includes video recording and viewing to aid in learning important new principles and how they can enhance your dancing tango.

Workshop is for all levels:

Advanced level dancers will learn to undo unconscious patterns that create undesirable form and prevents them from leading clearly and following effortlessly

Beginner- intermediate level dancers will establish a high performance foundation so you can advance more quickly with your ability to move, lead and follow.

The Milonga will include a special exhibition by Roman & Sherry demonstrating Apilado and Milonga/Salon style of Argentine Tango featuring a little choreographed performance art.

The workshop progresses from beginning to end, so all classes need to be attended.

Cost for 2 day workshop and milonga: $100 - if paid before January 25th.

LIVE MUSIC WITH PARLOR TANGO!!! Every year or so are we fortunate enough to get to dance to live tango music. Parlor Tango comes very highly rated. They are dedicated to traditional Argentine tango music composed between 1910 and 1950. Its repertoire of tangos, waltzes and milongas evokes the flavor of black-and-white movies and steamy dance halls. Indeed, Ed Loomis says that Parlor Tango is one of those rare groups that actually gets the traspie rhythms correct in milonga ... so don't miss this wonderful opportunity!
